HARRISBURG — Congress' failure to act means tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians are scheduled to lose their unemployment benefits sooner than expected.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Monday payments will stop in March for an estimated 44,000 people. It estimates 161,000 people will lose their benefits by May 31.

The federal expiration happened Sunday. Before that, people getting benefits were entitled to 99 weeks.

Members of Congress expect to resolve the dispute this week.

ERIE — A dining hall at a Penn State satellite campus is badly damaged following an overnight fire.The fire broke out about midnight today at the dining hall at Penn State Behrend in Erie. Heavy smoke forced about 275 students to evacuate from two nearby dorms.Fire officials said it appears the blaze started in the seating area of the Gazebo at Dobbins, adjacent to the school's main dining hall. It took more than an hour to get the fire under control. No injuries were reported. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

PITTSBURGH — Police closed a major Pittsburgh street because of fears a warehouse might collapse because of an overnight fire.Firefighters were called to the scene on West Carson Street about 3:20 a.m. today. The vacant warehouse has been abandoned for about 20 years.No injuries were reported in the fire, which was being investigated by the Allegheny County fire marshal.
