Harpp breaks Rock record
Slippery Rock University women's track standout Jenn Harpp set a new school record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35 minutes, 21.65 seconds Saturday at the Raleigh Relays.
The finish was good for second place, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and it shattered SRU's previous record of 35:53.79, set by Nicole Blaesser last season.
In men's competition, SRU senior Jeff Weiss managed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 14:12.15, placing seventh in the 5,000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays.
Weiss was the top Division II finisher in a race dominated by Division I athletes.
• SRU freshman Jacquelyn Kerr topped the field in the women's pole vault with a height of 11 feet, two and a half inches at the Western Pennsylvania Championships at California (Pa.) University.
At the same meet, Slippery Rock High School graduate Sarah Thompson placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:22.07.
On the men's side, freshman Cameron Daugherty won the pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet at the Western PA meet.
• The Rock's Mike Rose won the men's decathlon by scoring 5,905 points Saturday at the Virginia Military Institute's Track and Field Carnival.
Baseball
SRU sophomore designated hitter Adam Jury smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning that tied The Rock with Indiana (Pa.) at 6-all, moved to third base on a double by Derek Diruscia and scored on a wild pitch in a 7-6 win at Critchfield Park Saturday.
In the second game of the doubleheader, junior catcher Matt Adams went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run homer, but The Rock (19-9, 7-5) lost to IUP, 12-8.
Women's Tennis
Rock senior Kayla Blackburn tallied wins in both singles and doubles play Sunday in her team's 8-1 win over Millersville, giving her 179 career wins to set a school record.
Jessica Bungo held the previous record at 177.
Blackburn was paired with teammate Jessica Hilborn for the doubles win.
Women's Lacrosse
Amy Halls netted four goals and Casey Quinn added three, but The Rock (2-7) fell at home to Millersville, 14-11.
