Russell Newton Christy, 98, of Liberty Street, Clarion, died Friday at the Clarion Hospital.

Born on June 19, 1914, he was the son of Harvey Christy and Jennie Russell Christy.

Russell worked in the banking business. He was a federal bank examiner. He worked for Northwest Bank in Clarion, now Mellon. He then went to work for Farmers Bank, working there for 26 years.

On April 24, 1941, he married Grace L. Taylor. She preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 2004.

Russell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion and the Clarion Rotary. He was honored with the Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry’s 10th lifetime achievement award. Christy, who spent a long career in the financial industry, could still be found working at Farmers National Bank as a part-time maintenance man at the age of 97.

He supported the fundraising efforts of many local charitable organizations, and served on the Clarion Hospital Board of Directors for several years.

He loved people, enjoyed sailing and antique cars.

Surviving are one daughter, Susan Christy Joy, and her husband, John, of Clarion; a special friend, Joan Stewart; one sister, Bertha Sprague of Verona; two grandchildren, Jonathan Joy and Christopher Joy; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Grace; and one sister, Ruth Gumto.

CHRISTY — Visitation for Russell Newton Christy, who died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St., Clarion.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Katelyn Hendrickson, parish associate of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion, officiating. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery.

Memorial donations are suggested either to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion or to the Clarion Hospital Foundation.
