PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium will receive $250,000 from the state for its new Animal Health Center and an exhibit that opened in November, zoo officials said Wednesday.
The money will come from the Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program.
The grant will bring the zoo's Grow Wild Capital Campaign to $18.1 million. Attendance at the zoo has increased 27 percent since the Water's Edge exhibit, which houses polar bears and sea otters and features an underwater tunnel, opened in November.
Zoo officials hope attendance will reach 1 million by the end of the year.
LEWISTOWN, Pa. — The remains of a World War II gunner who died after his plane crashed in Germany more than 63 years ago will finally be laid to rest in his native central Pennsylvania.Staff Sgt. Robert Flood, 22, was a gunner aboard a 492nd Bomber Group plane that crashed in Germany in July 1944 during a mission. He will be buried Saturday with full military honors in Dry Run.An archaeologist who specializes in finding crash sites located Flood's plane in 2003, according to Paul Arnett, a historian for www.492ndbombgroup.com and the son of a pilot for the same bomber group.Eight others were aboard the plane. Remains of the crew had been identified over the last four years, Arnett said.According to Arnett, the 492nd Bomber Group was known as the "hard-luck group" for its tendency to return from missions more battered than other groups. Flood's crew was known as the "hard-luck crew" because their plane typically took some of the worst hits.
