Main Break: Water floods house; 4 dogs unhurt

Butler City Fire Chief Christopher Switala, center, and Butler police officers inspect the area where water flows from a water main break on Marvin Street on Wednesday.

A “significant” water main break on Marvin Street flooded the basement of a Butler house Wednesday and sent torrents of water downstream, possibly causing water damage to another home in the area, according to Butler Joint Fire Chief Christopher Switala.

No injuries were reported.

Several fire trucks and city police officers responded around 1 p.m. after a water main broke on Marvin Street off Center Avenue. The break crumbled a part of the street's pavement on Marvin Street, sending water and dirt into the basement of a nearby home, causing damage to part of the house. The house is being rented by a woman who wasn't home at the time, according to Switala, and there were four dogs inside at the time, but they were not hurt.

Water was seen streaming downhill to South Street, where it may have caused slight water damage to at least one other residence, Switala said.

At least one house had a water outage as a result, according to workers with Pennsylvania American Water.

Within minutes after Switala's arrival, Pennsylvania American Water arrived to shut off water to the broken water main.
