SRU gets split of twinbill

INDIANA — Sophomore right fielder Matt Kosik delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning Saturday afternoon, plating the winning runs in Slippery Rock University's 6-3 baseball win at Indiana (Pa.).

The win salvaged a split of a doubleheader for The Rock (14-16, 8-8), which dropped a twinbill to IUP Friday at Critchfield Park. The Crimson Hawks won the first game Saturday, 6-1.

IUP is 12-16 overall, 7-3 in PSAC West play.

Kosik homered in the third inning of the first game for SRU's lone run of the contest.

The Game 2 victory snapped a five-game losing streak for The Rock. Junior left-hander Jason Steen got the win in relief of starter Vince Lloyd.

Freshman third baseman Jamison Walck had three hits and scored two runs in SRU's win. He had five hits on the day.

Matt Howard and Kosik each had two hits in the second game.

Don Pugliese allowed only three hits in five-plus innings of Game 1, but was the hard-luck loser.

SRU hosts Seton Hill in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rock dropped its second straight twinbill Saturday, bowing to Mercyhurst 5-4 and 7-0.Butler graduate Jenna Geibel and Natalie Atkinson had RBI in the first inning of Game 1 to give SRU a 2-0 lead before Mercyhurst rallied.The Rock's Sheree Horvath homered in the fifth inning to tie the game 3-3, only to see Mercyhurst put the game away.Geibel had one of three hits for SRU (15-12, 3-3) in the second game.The Rock travels to Edinboro for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader today.
