Richard B. Biehl
Richard “Dick” B. Biehl, 91, of Butler passed away Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital due to age related causes.
Born on Aug. 14, 1921, he was a Butler resident from birth to passing. Dick was the youngest son of William and Jane Biehl, who owned the Biehl Grocery on East Brady and Third streets and the family's 156-acre dairy farm on Route 38.
Dick graduated from Butler High School and the University of Pittsburgh and went on to achieve his aspiration of becoming a pilot.
He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy pilot in the Pacific theater and was a flight instructor at Pensacola, Fla.
Later, he flew for the airlines and corporate charters until retirement. One of his favorite hobbies was upholstering, and he applied his skills to make over many private airplanes.
His other passion was music. At Butler High School he lettered with his trumpet and was a leader in the senior orchestra. As an adult, Dick was the handsome fellow who blew the trumpet in the Pete Bartoli Band, which played for dances, weddings and social events in Butler and the surrounding area.
Dick was a long-standing member of the Elks Lodge 170 and was also a Pittsburgh Panthers fan, who proudly wore his college ring until his passing.
Mr. Biehl is survived by his only child, Rick Biehl of Virginia; his only grandchild, Ricki Rae (Biehl) Lascody of Texas; two great-grandsons, James and Michael Lascody of Texas, and niece, Diane Cope.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, William Biehl; and his lovely wife, H. Rae Bucher-Biehl, also of Butler, who passed away May 21, 1977.
Biehl — A funeral for Richard “Dick” B. Biehl, who passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, will be at noon Tuesday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Mount Chestnut.
