Aubrey out of play

Butler golfer misses cut

John Aubrey Sr. loves the game of golf - but not when he's feeling rushed.

On the second day of the 66th Senior PGA Championship at Laurel Valley Golf Course Friday, the owner of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course was told by a course official that his group was lagging behind.

"On the 11th hole (the second hole of the day), the two guys I played with took a lot of time on No. 10," said Aubrey.

"The official came over and told us we were on the clock, which means we're four minutes behind. That got me off and out of my rhythm.

"He should have told those two guys, but he was looking at me. I should have asked him, 'Who's behind," Aubrey added.

Aubrey got off to a tough start and finished the day with a 7-over-par 79 on the Ligonier course.

His two-day total of 153 tied him with nine others for 89th place out of 153 golfers that finished.

To advance to Saturday and Sunday's rounds, however, the cut ended up being 6-over-par 150, which means 72 golfers will move on.

Despite the high scores by most golfers Friday due to windy conditions, Aubrey won't use the incident at No. 11 as an excuse because he knows he still has to go out and perform.

"I just got off to a bad start and couldn't recover," the Butler resident said. "It just kept spiraling down."

Aubrey three-putted on No. 10, then admitted he had a bad drive on No. 11, which he would bogey, then had another par, then another bogey.

He finished the afternoon with one birdie, on No. 7, but he also had two double bogeys.

"I had some dumb shots," he noted.

Despite his inauspicious start, Aubrey said he knew he still had a chance to make the cut.

"I had a 2-over yesterday, then shot a 7-over on the front nine (Friday)," said Aubrey. "Two doubles and a bunch of bogeys, but then I shot par for the final nines.

"I knew if I could make a couple of birdies I could still do it. I birdied the No. 7 (the 16th hole) and thought if I can get a birdie at 8 and 9, I could make it," Aubrey added.

Aubrey estimated that 6-over-par would be the cut-off point, so he figured 150 would be the magic number.

And he just fell short.

Still, Aubrey tried to keep things in perspective.

"Hey, that's what they do. I don't do it every day like these guys," said Aubrey. "It's an honor to play and compete against them.

"I played the game. I just rushed the next eight holes. That official got me out of rhythm."

With two days left of the tournament, Aubrey and his son and caddie, John Jr., were packing it up and heading for home.

"I had enough," said Aubrey. "It's a good golf course. I played six days. I've had enough."

Notes:

Jerry Pate fired a 4-under par 68 to take a one-shot lead over R.W. Eaks (139) while Mark McNulty shot a 6-under 66 to tie Mike Reid (140) for third place. … Graham Marsh, the first-day leader, followed up his 68 Thursday with a 74 to drop back into an eighth-place tie with Peter Jacobsen, Ray Floyd and Dana Quigley. … Because of the windy conditions, only 10 golfers from the morning flight broke par.
