Roycroft, McNerney shine

Butler County products help W&J to 21-14 win

Two Butler County products proved to be thorns in the side of the Grove City College football team on Saturday.

Knoch High graduate Tim McNerney scored two touchdowns on the ground and Butler High grad Jordan Roycroft caught another as Washington & Jefferson defeated the visiting Wolverines, 21-14 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Roycroft's nine-yard scoring catch early in the second period from quarterback Gino Rometo was bookended by McNerney's runs to paydirt of seven and nine yards.

The plays helped W&J build a 21-0 lead before Grove City made things interesting with two second-half scores.

GCC's Blaine Miller scored on a pair of short touchdown runs, the second coming in the fourth period, but the Wolverines (3-5, 1-4) were unable to score the equalizer.

McNerney finished the game with 25 carries for 97 yards and Roycroft grabbed eight passes for 85 yards for the Presidents (6-2, 4-1).

Women's Field Hockey

Gabrielle Malishchak scored a goal on a pass from Allison Banks in the 44th minute of play to lead Slippery Rock University to a 1-0 win over Limestone College on Saturday.

Lisa Belcastro made one save for The Rock (4-12).

In its final game of the regular season, The Rock battled host Lock Haven to a scoreless tie.Dana O'Neill made one save for SRU (12-3-3, 8-3-3), which is 8-0-3 in its last 11 contests.The Rock will be seeded fifth in the upcoming PSAC playoffs.

SRU dropped its overall record to 8-19 (5-12 in PSAC-West play) with a 3-0 loss to visiting Mercyhurst on Saturday.Kristin Slavoski, Sarah Cadwallader and Kaylee Smith each had five kills to pace The Rock, which lost by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-18.

Despite a 2-0 loss to host Lock Haven on Saturday, The Rock clinched a PSAC playoff berth thanks to Mercyhurst's 1-0 win over Gannon on Sunday.SRU (11-6-1, 5-4) won the PSAC title last season and will enter the 2010 playoffs as the fourth seed.The Rock will open the postseason by traveling to top-seeded Shippensburg on Wednesday.
