John Hoye

John C. Hoye, 97, of Volant passed away Wednesday at Jameson Care Center in New Castle.

John was a lifetime resident of Lawrence County. He was born on Feb. 23, 1917, to Norman and Rachel Hughes Hoye.

John graduated from Union High School in New Castle in the Class of 1936. He was a farmer.

He married Blanche Gardner on May 2, 1940. She passed away Sept. 13, 2003.

John loved his contact with friends, neighbors, business partners, family, and members of the many organizations he supported. He was a longtime member of the Wilmington School Board, beginning in the 1950s, when the new Lawrence County school districts were being formed. John believed in a strong educational system.

A longtime member of Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, he was a trustee, elder and Sunday school teacher for 68 years after moving to Plain Grove.

He was president of the Lawrence County Fair when the current property was purchased. He attended every fair and his family exhibited at every fair. He was a 4-H leader for many years in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a member of the Lawrence County Extension Board, the Lawrence County Conservation Board, the Plain Grove and Lawrence County Grange, and the FHA committee. He began raising and milking Jersey cattle in 1940. He was a member of all cattle organizations for the breed at the local, state and national levels.

He is survived by his two sons and his daughter, Clarence (Margie) Hoye of Williamsfield, Ohio, Donald (Edy) Hoye of New Wilmington, and Lois (John) McConnell of Volant; and his grandchildren, Gregory Hoye of Kinsman, Ohio, Pamela McConnell of Volant, Roberta (Ryan) Baney of Wampum, Joy (Sammy) Staples of Hermitage, Matthew (Lesley) Hoye of McMurray and Megan (Scott) Liesinger of Mechanicsville, Va., and his brother, Robert (Vivian) Hoye of New Wilmington. He is also survived by his 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, William and Homer; his sister, Eleanor Rowland; his granddaughter, Deborah Hoye, and his grandson, Stephen Hoye.

His family has a special thanks for the efforts and care by the staff at Jameson Care Center while John was a resident at the facility.

Hoye — The calling hours for John C. Hoye, who passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, are from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, 626 Plain Grove Road, Slippery Rock.A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Stan Keehlwetter officiating. Burial will be at South Plain Grove Cemetery.Memorial contributions can be made to Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, 626 Plain Grove Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
