Col. John F. Cary, 84, of Colorado Springs, Colo., passed away Monday at Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born Dec. 3, 1929, in Bridgeville and raised in Evans City, he was the son of the late Bolard and Margaret Irvine Cary.

He married Mary Ann McCune in 1953.

He attended Grove City College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and serving in the Korean War. He graduated from flight school in 1953. He was selected to attend the Air War College and graduated in 1971, before serving a tour in Vietnam. After retiring, he went on to complete his baccalaureate degree from University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, in 1985.

Col. Cary served 30 years in the Air Force. He proudly spent 16 years as a fighter pilot before arriving in Colorado Springs, where he served as the director of operations at NORAD, and director of personnel management at Peterson Field. His many distinguished awards included the Bronze Star, Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, Vietnam Service Medal and AF Presidential Unit Citation.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (McCune) Cary; his son, John Cary of Salt Lake City, Utah; his daughter, Nancy (Cary) Wermer and her husband, Alan, of Saline, Mich.; his sisters-in-law, Barbara and Natalie Cary, and his brother-in-law, Ray Schar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Schar; his brothers, Bolard, Edwin and James Cary, and his sister-in-law, Maxine Cary.

Cary— A memorial service for Col. John F. Cary, who passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs, Colo., with the Rev. John Goodale officiating.Private inurnment with military honors will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.Memorial contributions may be made to the Deacons Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.Arrangements are under the direction of Swan-Law Funeral Directors, Colorado Springs, Colo.
