Rain wins this race
BUFFALO TWP — World of Outlaws driver Joey Saldana set himself up for a successful run at the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Already holding the fast-lap record at the Sarver track, Saldana turned the fastest lap of 13.042 seconds during the first portion of time trials.
After a nearly three-hour rain delay, the Brownsburg, Ind., driver of the No. 9 Sprint car was the fastest during warm-up sessions with a time of 13.197 seconds.
And he did all that with his car owner, Nextel Cup driver Kasey Kahne, looking on as the race's grand marshal.
Only none of it counted.
Rain returned shortly into the race program's second shot at time trials, forcing postponement of the entire show.
The Silver Cup XVI card is rescheduled for today. Gates open at 5 p.m., time trials are slated for 7. and racing for 7:30.
Saldana and 50 other Sprint cars will be back to try it again.
"Holding a record at any track is nice, though there's no money involved with it,"Saldana said. "When you're the fastest among 51 cars, it shows you and your race team are doing some things right.
"We've always seemed to draw good pills here, we have a good engine program and Lernerville is a good motor track."
But Saldana has never won a feature here. Kahne has. The NASCARdriver took the checkered flag at the Bauman Memorial in 1999.
"I have some fond memories of this track and of Sprint car racing in general,"Kahne said. "I feel fortunate to have a chance to experience it as an owner.
"Joey's been running great and I think we have a good shot at winning this race."
Saldana is all in favor of that.
"The Don Martin Memorial is definitely among the top 10 races on the (Outlaws) schedule, probably in the top five,"he said. "Winning the $30,000 prize here is something I'd love to add to my resume."
Saldana already has won nine Outlaws features this season, which is second to Donny Schatz's 10 victories. Saldana also is the runner-up to Schatz in the Outlaws points standings.
Schatz won this race last year and was among the faster qualifiers before the rain halted the action Tuesday.
"Our car is as good as Donny's, but he's so consistent,"Saldana said. "That's why it's so hard to catch him in points. I've got three DNF's this year and he hasn't had any.
"If you want to stay in a points race, you have to finish races."
One thing that appears safe is Saldana's Lernerville track record of 12.334 seconds, which was set in May 2002. That's an average speed of 131.344 mph.
"They've extended Turn 2 here by about 20 feet sice then,"Saldana said. "I think I'm good. I hope so."
His biggest fan is Kahne.
"I love owning a (Sprint) race team,"he said. "My cousin and my family are a big part of it. They take care of it so I can just come out and enjoy the racing when I get the chance.
"Joey was third in points last year, he won the Kings Royal and he's doing even better this year."
He's even a shade ahead of Danny Lasoski — driver of the No. 83 car owned by NASCARdriver Tony Stewart — in the points standings.
"Tony and I tease each other a little over this,"Kahne said. "He's like me and I'm like him. ... We like being part of what we once did. Sprint car racing is how we got where we're at."
Notes: Jason Meyers broke the axle on his left rear wheel coming into Turn 3 during the first set of time trials, causing him to flip violently into the safety fence in front of the pit area. He was unhurt and returned to time trials late Tuesday night in his backup car.
