Minto optimistic after doing last weigh-in
PENN TWP — Brian Minto weighed in at 202 pounds Friday, the day before the final fight of his professional boxing career.
Minto (41-11) will take on Andras Csomor (17-11)of Hungary in a 10-round cruiserweight main event Saturday night at Kelly Automotive Park. The pro-am boxing card is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
The weigh-in took place at Hardwood Cafe. Csomor, who does not speak English, weighed in at 203. He arrived in Butler at 1 a.m. Friday.
“He looks tired,” Minto said. “Hopefully, I can take advantage of that and take it to him early in the fight.”
Csemor’s trainer, Brunner Istvan, speaks little English, but expressed confidence in Csemor’s chances.
Csemor accepted the fight two weeks ago, after Minto’s originally scheduled opponent, 42-year-old Gyula Bozai, tore a biceps muscle while training.
“We brought you over a good fighter, exciting fighter,” Istvan said. “He is a powerful puncher.
‘We are looking to see his hand raised.”
Csemor, 28, has 14 knockouts among his 17 wins. His last eight losses are to opponents with a combined won-loss record of 160-15.
Minto has been sparring against a 180-pound boxer “who is extremely quick” in preparation to fight an active fight.
“I’ll be doing a lot of moving,” he said. “I’m a little nervous, fighting in my hometown and all, but I’m confident.”
Nobody is confident about the weather as storms are in the forecast for Saturday evening. Minto’s fight may be the first one in the ring if it means beating the arrival of bad weather.
The ring will be covered by a tarp until the fight card begins. Eight amateur bouts and two other pro fights are scheduled.
Three Butler amateurs — Cody Hall, Austin Warman and Clint Bonetti — are slated to fight.
“If we’re forced to have a rain delay, that’s what we’ll do,” said DeQuan Young, publicist for the card. “We’re prepared to be flexible.
“If the (Pa. Boxing) Commission determines that storms will not allow the show to take place, we’ll move it to Monday. But that’s the commission’s decision to make.”
Gates will open at 4 p.m. Tickets will be on sale throughout the day at Kelly Automotive Park.
