SRU basketball in PSAC playoffs

Jabril Bailey scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to an 81-70 PSAC victory over 17th-ranked Mercyhurst College Saturday and clinch a PSAC-West playoff tournament berth.

SRU (18-8, 8-4) can finish no worse than third place in the conference as the top four squads advance to the tournament.

Devin Taylor added 15 points while Maron Brown added 15 points and 11 rebounds — a school-record 16th double-double on the season — and Aubin Reeves, making his first start in replacing injured point guard Jon Valeriano, had 14 points.

Mercyhurst used runs of 12-0 and 14-0 to defeat The Rock 66-48 on Saturday.Danielle Smith led SRU (3-21, 1-11) with 14 points and five rebounds while Sherita Stanley had 12 points and a game-high seven assists.Butler graduate Amy Achesinski had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Mercyhurst (15-12, 7-5).

The Rock (5-1) swept all three doubles matches, including a 9-8 (9-7) victory in the No. 3 match by Bethel Park graduates Elizabeth Yetiskul and Samantha Bruggeman, in a 6-2 triumph over Bloomsburg (3-1).

Whitney Hendershot posted a winning leap of 1.70 meters in the high jump to lead The Rock women at the Kent State University Tune-Up Meet Saturday.In all, seven athletes finished with top 10 performances.On the men's side, Cameron Daugherty recorded a season-best 4.91 meters to place third in the pole vault.

Matt Howard continued his torrid hitting Sunday as SRU scored wins of 9-8 and 5-4 over St. Joseph's and Tiffin, respectively, in Chillicothe, Ohio.Howard hit his third home run of the weekend in the eighth inning for the deciding run against Tiffin. He hit a grand slam against Tiffin Saturday. His RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday capped a two-run rally against St. Joseph's.Adam Jury had three hits, including a homer, in Sunday's win over Tiffin while Nick Caito added a homer. Reliever Colin McCoy and freshman startter Lou Trivino were the winning pitchers Sunday.The Rock (4-0) faces Shippensburg in a doubleheader Saturday in Aberdeen, Md.
