Rock sweeps pair from rival Vulcans

The Slippery Rock University baseball team swept rival California (Pa.) in a doubleheader Sunday by scores of 3-2 and 2-1 at Jack Critchfield Park.

With the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game One, senior catcher Derek DiRuscia drew a one-out walk and moved around to score the winning run thanks to three wild pitches from Cal’s Sean Welsh.

Matt Howard contributed two singles to the win and freshman Ryan Oglesby was the pitcher of record, giving up a pair of hits and striking out one in one inning of relief.

In the second game, SRU southpaw Joby Lapkowicz picked up his first win of the season after allowing just one unearned run on four hits, fanning three and walking four in the first five frames.

Lee Foxton had two hits, a run and an RBI for The Rock (10-8, 3-1).

John Kovalik pitched the final two innings for the save.

Women’s LacrosseDespite five goals and an assist from Casey Quinn, SRU dropped a 13-9 decision to host West Chester.Emma VanDenburg scored twice for The Rock (2-3, 0-3).
