BUTLER TWP — A recent event by the township raised thousands of dollars for a local foundation to fight hunger among students.

The Butler Township Board of Commissioners presented a $6,000 check to members of the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation at its Monday, June 15, meeting. The money represents proceeds from the Guys Who Grill event held May 30 in Preston Park.

“It was an excellent night,” Commissioner Ed Natali said about the event.

The funds will be used toward the foundation’s Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program, which supplies food through the weekends for elementary school students in Butler Area School District.

Audray Muscatello Yost and two other members of the foundation attended the meeting to receive the check and thank the township for their work planning and putting on the event.

“We can’t do (our program) without getting money from our community and this is such a fun way. We love it and hopefully sometime you’ll have women doing it too,” she said.

Yost said the program relies on funding from community members and organizations as well as a dedicated team of roughly 40 volunteers. She said the funds raised at the event will represent a significant chunk of all the food required to run next year’s program.

The Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program will restart when school is in session in September, she said.
