SCOUTS

Harvey

Shane Patrick Harvey, 15, of Troop 30 Oakland Township, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Sept. 25. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on Nov. 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Butler, where he is a member.

Shane is the son of Cheryl (VanDyke) Harvey of Chicora and Keith Harvey of Chicora. He is the grandson of Rosie VanDyke and the late William VanDyke of Butler, formerly of Freeport, and Dorothea Harvey and the late Harold G. Harvey of Sarver.

Shane follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Connor, who earned his Eagle Scout in 2012. His younger brother, Dillon, is a Star Scout.

For his Eagle Scout leadership service project, Shane chose Elliott Acres Therapeutic Riding Center in Chicora as the beneficiary of his effort.

Shane, with the help of family, friends, adult leaders, members of Troop 30 and donations, built a 900-foot fence for a new riding trail, built a wall in the tack room, built shelves in the tack room, painted three horse barns and painted the fence of the main show arena, including a handicapped accessible ramp for the riders to mount their horse and enter the arena. The project took 175 hours to complete.

Shane was awarded the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouts, in February 2009.

He’s earned 47 merit badges as a scout. He’s held the positions of den chief, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, scribe, quartermaster and historian.

Shane is a sophomore at Butler Intermediate High School. He is a member of 4-H and Sons of the American Legion, Post 778, Lyndora.
