SCOUT NEWS

On Feb. 9, “Scouting Sunday,” the Nixon United Methodist Church will celebrate 50 years of Scouting at the church. For 50 years, the United Methodist Men has chartered Troop 53, Moraine Trails Council.

Troop 53 has produced more than 40 Eagle Scouts in that 50 years.

According to Pastor Bruce Merritt, “The current troop is very active, not just in our church, but in the community and area.”

At the Feb. 9 service, Troop 53 will assist with the worship service, and some special presentations will be awarded, with a reception following the service.

Jennings Environmental Education Center will host a Maple Sugaring Day for scouts on March 22. The event is for scouts from 7 to 11 years old. The scouts will partake in a session that will show how a tree works and demonstrate the art of maple sugaring.

The program will be from 10 a.m. to noon, and later from 1 to 3 p.m. The scouts will receive patches for their participation.

Den leaders and Girl Scout troop leaders must register their scouts by calling the Jennings Center at 724-794-1090 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Leaders may also register in person on Feb. 5, during the same hours. The program is $2 per person; space is limited. Scout leaders will need to confirm and prepay by Feb. 28.
