Pullman Park starting Hall of Fame
Host of many events over the past 86 years, Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park is about to add another.
Its Hall of Fame.
A five-person committee has been formed to lay the groundwork toward formation of the Pullman Park Hall of Fame, which will announce its first three inductees during a 2021 Butler BlueSox home game.
The idea to form a Hall of Fame for the ballpark came from park director Dean Selfridge.
“I was checking out Fenway Park (home of the Boston Red Sox) online and came across a Hall of Fame the Red Sox had established there,” Selfridge said. “I thought, why not do that here? Pullman Park is filled with history.”
The Pullman Park HOF committee consists of Dan Cunningham, Bob Cupp, Rachelle Savannah, Michelle Stockard and Jay Miranda.
Selfridge said he will not be involved in the selection of inductees.
“I'll spearhead (the HOF) and will facilitate things, but I don't want to have any voting power,” he said. “I'll leave it to the committee to run with it in that regard.”
The initial plan is to induct three athletes per year along with a lifetime achievement award honoree.
“There are a lot of ways people can be inducted into this Hall of Fame,” Cunningham said. “There will be a lot of players from different sports, but it could be umpires, people who worked the park and were dedicated to it for a long time, things like that.
“The first thing we need to do is collect resumes submitted by people, so we can review them.”
Anyone interested in nominating somebody for the Hall of Fame may contact Cunningham at dcunningham@hcpainc.com.
“Initially, this will be a tall task,” Cupp admitted. “This park has been around forever. But we have to start somewhere.”
Cupp added that the potential diversity of inductees will make the Hall of Fame unique.
“I can see a longtime spectator getting in, someone who has been dedicated and done special things for the park ... the applications should be interesting,” he said.
Pullman Park debuted in Butler in 1934. Minor league baseball teams played there from 1935 through 1951.
Cunningham said a plaque will be put on display at the main entrance of the ballpark, with metal plates added to it each year.
“The plates will have the inductee's name and the reason for the induction,” Cunningham said.
“I think this Hall of Fame is a good idea. It's a great way to display the history of this ballpark and there is plenty of it.”
