Mary Harriett Skocz

Mary Harriett Skocz, formerly of Butler, passed away Tuesday at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., from cardiopulmonary failure.

She was active in Arlington County community affairs, church ministries at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and volunteer work at Wakefield High School.

Mary and her husband, Dennis, lived in Arlington since 1983 when they returned from a foreign-service assignment in Madras, India.

Mary was born in and grew up in Butler, where she attended Butler High School and was active in community theater and competition debate and speech. After graduating from Slippery Rock College, Mary taught migrant children for three years in Okeechobee, Fla.

Mary is survived by her husband, Dennis; her three adult sons, Jeremy, Adam and Timothy; her brother, David Smith; and her sisters, Gretchen Carrarie and Veronica “Cookie” Gibbs.

Skocz— Visitation for Mary Harriett Skocz, who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at theMurphy Funeral Home, Arlington, Va.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Arlington, Va. An informal reception will take place around 1 p.m. at the church after burial at Columbia Gardens Cemetery.
