Steel City Tunnel Partners, a joint venture between Saxonburg-based Brayman Construction Corporation and The Lane Construction Corporation, of Charlotte, N.C., was awarded a $1 billion contract to construct the Ohio River Tunnel.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project is a component of the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority’s Clean Water Plan, a multi-billion-dollar program designed to improve water quality throughout the region. It is the first of three major deep tunnels planned under Allegheny County Sanitary Authority’s Regional Tunnel System.

The project includes construction of about 4.9 miles of deep tunnel, multiple shafts, regulator structures and associated near-surface facilities designed to capture and convey wet weather combined sewer flows for treatment. It is expected to reduce combined sewer overflows into regional waterways by about 7 billion gallons annually.

Construction is expected to begin later this year with completion contributing to long-term improvements in water quality, regulatory compliance and regional infrastructure.

“This award strengthens Brayman’s heavy civil infrastructure portfolio in the Pittsburgh region,” said Stephen Muck, CEO and Chairman of Brayman Construction. “As a partner of Steel City Tunnel Partners, we will leverage our regional and technical expertise as we deliver this work for Allegheny County Sanitary Authority’s Clean Water Plan and the communities it serves.”
