Outlaws sprint-ing to Lernerville

BUFFALO TWP — The World of Outlaws Sprint car series rolls into Lernerville Speedway Tuesday night.

The 40-lap Commonwealth Clash pays $10,000 to win. Danny Holtgraver and Carl Bowser don’t figure to be in victory lane for that kind of pay-day.

They just hope to be on the track for the final race of the evening.

Holtgraver, 17, of Pittsburgh, and Bowser, 20, of Sarver, will be the youngest local drivers among Tuesday’s competitors.

“I’m coming to this show to learn,” Holtgraver said. “It’s a driving lesson for me.”

Holtgraver finished 11th in points driving his No. D4 at Lernerville last season and won the track’s Rookie of the Year Award.

He’s won two features at Mercer Raceway, but has yet to find victory lane here.

“I’d just like to make the show Tuesday,” Holtgraver said. “That’d be a great experience. I know I can’t compete with those guys. They’re the most talented drivers in the world.

“But I talk to them in the pits, watch the way they drive, how they handle the track ... You can always learn from the best.”

Like Holtgraver, Bowser’s goal is to make the show. He has yet to achieve that against the Outlaws.

“I’ve gotten there in All-Star shows, but not against these guys,” he said.

Bowser finished third in points at Lernerville in 2006. The driver of the No. 10 car is considered one of the more promising local performers in the Sprint division.

“Carl shows tremendous patience for a driver his age,” crew chief Mike Shick said. “There are drivers who have been racing out here for years who don’t show the patience he has.

“He’s very smooth. He doesn’t panic. It’s a matter of time before he makes his mark here.”

Shick is a 2004 Freeport graduate. Bowser graduated from Freeport in 2005. The two were in a class together in high school and teamed up in racing shortly thereafter.

At marketing major at UNC-Charlotte, Shick did not rejoin Bowser’s race team until this past Friday night.

“The car looks pretty good,” he said. “I don’t think we’re gonna have to mess with it very much.”

Bowser knows what he and other local drivers are up against Tuesday.

“Outlaw drivers are more experienced, more talented, run the best equipment and have crews whose only job is to make the car go fast,” he said.

“It’s all about making the show for us. Maybe we don’t belong there, but we want to show we can get there.”

Craig Dollansky won the most recent Outlaws feature — his first win of the year — Saturday nuight at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo. He led all 35 laps in posting his 19th career Outlaws victory.

Tim Shaffer — track champion here in 1993 — finished second in that race.

Donny Schatz is the Outlaws points leader with 2,717 coming into Tuesday’s action. He has four wins on the tour this year and 13 top-five finishes.

Joey Saldana is second in points with 2,703, including five wins and 12 top-five finishes. He also set the Lernerville track record of 12.334 seconds in 2002.

Besides Schatz and Saldana, no Outlaw driver has more than two wins or eight top-five finishes in the series this season.

Each of the top seven drivers in points has won at least one Outlaws feature. Daryn Pittman is third in points, followed by Dollansky, Jason Meyers, Danny Lasoski and Steve Kinser.

Kinser has won 15 features at Lernerville. Schatz has won two, including last year’s Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup race.

There are 27 drivers running the full Outlaws Sprint series this year. This is the 29th consecutive year Lernerville has been a site on the Outlaws’ schedule.

Time trials begin at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Racing begins at 8 p.m. The rain date is Wednesday.
