Mars council updated on Brew Fest, July 4 events
MARS — Borough council received updates about two upcoming summer events at its Monday, June 1, meeting.
Mayor Gregg Hartung told council everything is ready for Brew Fest on June 6. He also projected that if the weather remains good, Brew Fest should attract 1,200 people.
Additionally, Hartung said the borough’s July 4 celebration will begin at 5 p.m. July 3, at Marburger Field.
Some of the planned activities include an exhibition game featuring the Mars Area High School softball team; and a punting, passing and kicking competition on the football field.
Other events planned include early American games, such as sack races, a presentation from the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center dance troupe and a big-screen showing of “The Sandlot,” Hartung said.
The celebrations will continue July 4.
Mars will hold a ceremony to honor the USS Mars bell at 11 a.m. The annual July 4 parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. A block party at Marburger Field and a fireworks show are also planned.
Hartung also informed council the new flagpole near the spaceship will be ready in time for the July 4 celebrations.
In other business, council:
• approved a $3,350 bid by Bowers Industrial Enterprises to replace caps on two reservoirs,
• approved a contract not to exceed $2,500 with B & H Excavating to replace a curb on Garfield Street
• jpand paid bills totaling $27,060.
