Glen L. Helman, 81, of Cabot, formerly of Apollo, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospice, Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot.

Born, March 29, 1926, in Oklahoma, Pa., he was the son of Arthur L. and Florence I. Egly Helman.

He lived in the Apollo area most of his life and had been a teller at the Apollo Trust Co. from 1950-53 and then was an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance in Apollo. He owned his own agency for 37 years before retiring in 1990.

During World War II, he served in the Far Eastern Air Command as a member of the Army Air Force.

Mr. Helman was a 1944 graduate of Apollo High School and a 1950 alumnus of Duquesne University. In 1975, he became a chartered life underwriter.

He was a member of the Apollo Area Lions Club, where he was treasurer, assisted with the 4th of July celebration, and was one of the originators of the Apollo Little League organization. He also was a member of the Apollo Elks Lodge 386.

He also was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Apollo, where he served as treasurer, was a member of the endowment committee and the church council and was a Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Helman was former Apollo council president and helped get both state and federal funding for community projects. He was president of the Apollo Memorial Library, a member of the 175th Apollo Area 1991 Septiquin-Centennial Board of Directors Celebration Committee and a former member of the Apollo American Legion Post 408. He also belonged to the Valley of Pittsburgh Consistory and Lodge 437 F&AM and the Scottish Rite.

He enjoyed going for walks, watching sports and spending time with his family.

Surviving are a daughter, Malinna A. (John) Townsend; four grandchildren, Kelli, Joshua, Matthew and Kaitlin Townsend; and a sister, Betty (Blaine) King. All are of Spring Church. Many nieces and nephews and a close friend, Edie Waltenbaugh of Cabot, also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Coffman Helman, who died in 2005, and a sister, Gladys Rishel.
