Cranberry Elks to host annual Flag Day ceremony

The Cranberry Elks Lodge will host its annual Flag Day Ceremony at noon June 14, at the lodge, 20720 RTE 19, Cranberry Township. The event, which is open to the public, commemorates the rich history and enduring symbolism of the American flag, according to the lodge.

The Cranberry VFW Color Guard will present the flag. Members of the Scouts of America Troop #404 will raise the flag outside. Light refreshments will be served following the brief ceremony.

In 1908, the Elks Lodges began the tradition of an annual ceremony to honor the flag, a practice that predates the official recognition of Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

The Elks were the first fraternal organization to mandate the formal observance of Flag Day. The tradition continues today.
