Robert Stirling Irwin III
Robert Stirling Irwin III of Pawley's Island, S.C., passed away suddenly Wednesday at his home.
The son of Dr. Robert S. Irwin and Elizabeth May Irwin, he was raised in Iowa and West Virginia and was a Pennsylvania resident for 50 years.
In 1962, he graduated from Wake Forest University, where he attended on scholarship and lettered in football for four years. In 1964, he attained a master's degree in education from the University of Toledo.
He began his teaching and coaching career in Meadville, Pa. In 1970, he was named an assistant professor at Mansfield University, Mansfield, Pa., where he continued to coach football and track.
During his tenure at Mansfield, he served as chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department for 14 years. He also acted as a student teacher adviser with the Education Department. He retired from Mansfield in 2002 and was granted the honor of professor emeritus.
Bob took great pride in being an educator, a coach and most importantly, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, a hunter, a sometimes golfer, a dedicated historian and a connoisseur of fine bourbon. Bob relished life and enjoyed bringing humor and insightful conversation to all situations.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Harriet Boland Irwin; his daughter, Cynthia Irwin Joiner (Timothy); and two grandsons, Nathan and Zachary Joiner.
IRWIN — Visitation for Robert Sterling Irwin III, who died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Monday at the Boylan Funeral Home, 116 E. Main St., Evans City.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Harmon officiating. Burial will be at the Irwin Family Cemetery in Evans City.Kaufman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Williamsport, Pa., assisted in the arrangements.
