BlueSox runner eludes tag to plate winning run

Ryan McChesney has another career if the baseball thing doesn't work out.

Dancer, perhaps. Or Reggie Bush stand-in.

The Butler catcher avoided a tag from Danville catcher Jason Hamm with an ankle-breaking move that would have made the most elusive NFL running backs proud for the decisive run in a 3-2 BlueSox win over the Dans at Pullman Park Friday night.

"I don't know how I avoided the tag, to be honest," McChesney said. "I knew the throw was going to beat me. It was all instinct."

The play was an aggressive one — a trademark this season of the BlueSox and their young manager, Jason Wuerfel.

With Brett Zurliene on first base and McChesney on second with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Greg DeSantis hit a chopper to Danville second baseman Frank Raudaw, who threw quickly to shortstop Chris Lewellyn to try to turn the double play.

Meanwhile, McChesney chugged at full speed around third. Lewellyn pump-faked a throw to first, then hesitated before twirling to throw to home.

The throw beat McChesney, but his quick feet allowed him to avoid the tag and to put Butler up 3-2.

"I always send the runner on a play like that," Wuerfel said. "McChesney, well, he isn't as fast as a lot of the runner I send, but he did the job. I think the crowd helped, because (Lewellyn) hesitated because he didn't hear what was going on."

The crowd was in full throat throughout the game.

More than 1,500 fans crammed into Pullman Park to see the BlueSox and the postgame fireworks display.

It was the second sellout of the year for Butler.

And it was a great send off for starting pitcher Chuck Nichols.

The right-hander threw 6X\c solid innings, scattering eight hits, striking out six and walking no one. He lowered his ERA to 2.67 in his final start for the team.

Nichols will return to Alvernia College to attend summer classes for his business administration major.

"I pitched here the last time there was a sellout," Nichols said. "The crowd is great. It really pumps you up."

Nichols didn't know he needed to take summer classes until three weeks ago.

"It's kind of disappointing," Nichols said. "But the time I spent here was great. I wish I didn't have to leave this team and this park. Pitching here is like pitching in a minor league park. I'll miss the guys."

Notes: Usually a starter, Tom Kahl worked a perfect ninth for his first save for Butler. ... Three fans were injured when foul balls screamed into the stands. A broken bat also tomahawked into the bleachers down the left-field line. No one was seriously injured. ... McChesney went 2-for-2 and also drove in a run. ... Butler cleanup hitter Brian Youchak went 2-for-3 to raise his average to .385.
