Joseph Meyer
Mr. Joseph Edward Meyer of Wexford passed away Thursday after an extended illness. He was 87 years old.
He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wexford.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Harriet Meyer, and two stepdaughters and their husbands, Doris Fischer (Robert) of Baden, and Connie Berie (Brian) of Freedom. He also leaves behind two stepgrandsons, Neil Fischer of Baden, and Christopher Berie of Seven Fields. Joe is survived by one sister, Marcy Perpetua of Carnegie, and countless nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Joe was born in Troy Hill, Pittsburgh, into a large and loving family, to the late Anna Schell and Edward J. Meyer. He loved talking about Troy Hill and all of his childhood memories in the neighborhood. He graduated from North Catholic High School in Troy Hill and then enlisted in the Navy.
After serving in the Navy, Joe worked many jobs, before becoming a fireman for the City of Pittsburgh, where he retired as a Captain of Company 38. Joe also was a pilot and loved to fly a Piper Cub on weekends. In later years, he never missed shooting pool with his friends every morning at the Blueberry Hill Retirement Center.
In addition to his parents; his sister, Anna, and all of his brothers, Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores (Dolly) Meyer and a son, Jay Michael Meyer of Pittsburgh.
MEYER — Friends and family of Joseph Edward Meyer, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the George A. Thoma Funeral Home, 10418 Perry Highway, Wexford.
A blessing service will follow at noon.
Interment will be in St. Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery, 4000 Mount Troy Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15214.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 201 Church Road, Wexford, PA 15090.
