Slippery Rock continues street updates
SLIPPERY ROCK ― Slippery Rock Borough Council approved a purchase of $57,702.50 to Keystone Ridge for refreshed benching and trash cans at a meeting Tuesday, May 19, at the council meeting.
The improvements are a continuation of a series of updates to Main Street through the Community and Campus Connections Project, a project aiming to improve safety and walkability on the town’s streets.
Borough manager Christian Laskey said the 31 benches around the town are not being outright replaced. Having been around for over 10 years, council felt the faded benches were due for an update.
“We’re not looking to get new ones. They’re fine. They’re just gonna get them sandblasted and powder coated.” Laskey said.
The 25 trash cans in downtown Slippery Rock will be replaced with dual trash and recycling receptacles. Laskey said the cans will be a similar size and follow the same pickup schedule as the previous ones.
“Just a little bit of an update, freshen them up and have the recycling option.” Laskey said.
Lights and light pole replacements are also on the list of updates, Laskey said they expect to see them installed by spring 2027 at the latest.
“The ball is still rolling. It’s just rolling a little slower than we all anticipated.” Laskey said.
The work is being done through funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Multimodal Transportation Fund. The grant gave Slippery Rock University and the borough $1.1 million for town improvements.
