Briggs snares All-Star checkered

BUFFALO TWP - It was a chilly Friday night at Lernerville Speedway, but there was no lack of heated action on the track.

In the All-Star Late Model feature, Rick "Boom" Briggs nudged Greg Satterlee as both cars came out of turn two on the 47th lap.

Satterlee, who had earned the pole position and who led the race for the previous 12 laps, lost control as he headed down the back straightaway.

The action brought the race's sixth caution flag and Satterlee was forced to the back of the pack on the restart.

Briggs, who broke into the top five on the 15th lap, paced the field for the final three laps to win the 50-lap event.

Saxonburg's Alex Ferree placed third.

"I had the top line the entire race," said Satterlee, who settled for 13th place. "I was running the same line, and when we got to turn two, (Briggs) came right across the track and collided with me. I don't know if he didn't see me or what happened."

Ironically, Satterlee was involved in a similar situation earlier in the race.

He had given up the top spot to Jason Covert on the first lap, but regained it on lap 35.

As both cars negotiated turn four on lap 40, Satterlee bumped into Covert, whose car smacked into the wall. Covert left the race and did not return.

Briggs moved from third place to second on the restart, setting the stage for the late fireworks.

"I just did the same thing that (Satterlee) did to Covert," said Briggs after the race, amid a chorus of boos from the fans. "It was bump racing, but, trust me, I did not wreck him on purpose."

It was the first feature win at Lernerville for Briggs, who lives in Bear Lake, Pa., and is a regular at Smethport Raceway in McKean County. He had raced at Lernerville about 10 times before Friday.

"Racing's funny," said Briggs, 37. "One lap you're running great and the next, you're way behind. When (Satterlee) and Covert were racing so hard up front, I just came right up on them."

Satterlee and Covert both won their heat races, while Briggs earned a spot in the feature by placing third in his heat.

n In the night's first feature, the Pro Late Model event, David Scott took the checkered flag after holding off Wexford's Mike Pegher Jr.

Due to the number of caution flags in the seven heat races before the two feature races, and four of them in the first four laps of the Pro Late Models, the event was trimmed from 20 laps to 15.

Scott led most of the way, though Pegher did pace the field for a brief time on lap 14.

Just as he was coming out of turn four to begin his final rotation, Pegher, who had won his heat race, bumped into the wall.

The collision did not prevent him from finishing the race, but it allowed Scott to breath easier on the final lap.

Notes: There was a total of 68 cars in the pits, 46 All-Star Late Models and 22 Pro Late Models. ... Fab Four racing returns to Lernerville next Friday night.
