ADAMS TWP — The scoreboard at Mars Athletic Complex ticked down the final 40:04 of Wednesday night’s WPIAL Class 2A girls lacrosse quarterfinal only because rules required it to.

Three-time defending district champion and top seed Mars’ 23-1 win over No. 8 Oakland Catholic wasn’t ever in question.

Planets (18-1) junior Hailey Long found the back of the net 9 seconds into the matchup. With 4:04 remaining in the initial quarter, freshman Lola Seideneck wound up the mercy clock.

“I think one of the things that we wanna do is just play fast and play smart,” Mars coach Abby Latona said afterward. “And if we can do that in the first few minutes, I think it’s good momentum to carry throughout.”

The Planets, who have won 11 straight, advance to take on No. 4 South Fayette, which beat No. 5 Franklin Regional 15-4, Monday at a time and location to be determined.

Long notched a hat trick within the game’s first 3:16, while Seideneck posted one of her own 3:21 into the second quarter, that marker making it a 15-0 contest.

Junior Katie Blake finished with a game-high seven goals, while classmate Lucy Balasz and Long both closed the contest out with four. Senior Anna McGrath added two, and Tess McGrath, Jenna Smith and Reanna Kolarcik-Schmitt also got on the board for Mars.

“She just has really taken off this year,” Latona said of Blake. “Been a huge part of our attack, and when she has the ball, watch out goalies.”

The Eagles (11-6) didn’t score until under 4:30 remained.

“We try not to underestimate any teams, and we didn’t underestimate them,” Latona said. “They had a good win on Monday, and we just want to continue to play our game, no matter who we play against, whether it’s close or there’s a gap.”
