Mars baseball falls to Thomas Jefferson in tight first-round playoff: Roundup

Justin Fry’s RBI-single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning was the decisive hit in No. 3 Thomas Jefferson’s 3-2 win over No. 14 Mars in a WPIAL Class 5A baseball first-round playoff Tuesday at Boyce Mayview Park.

The Planets end the season with an 8-11 record.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Mars tied the game when Logan Creighan doubled in Tyler Rennebeck.

Grady Speigle had two hits, including a double, for the Planets.

Braden Schmitt pitched the entire game for Mars, striking out three, walking two and allowing three earned runs on nine hits.

Cranberry 10, Union/A-C Valley — Trent Fleming’s single to lead off the game was the Falcon Knights’ lone hit in this five-inning defeat.

Alex McIntyre singled three times and drove in four runs for the Berries.

Boys tennis

In the first round of the PIAA Class 2A team tournament, WPIAL runner-up North Catholic dispatched District 9 champion DuBois Central Catholic with a 5-0 sweep.

The Trojans will meet District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan in a state quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.

Boys volleyball

No. 7 Montour beat No. 10 North Catholic 3-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A tournament and will visit No. 2 Seton LaSalle in Thursday’s quarterfinals. No stats were provided.

Softball

Lillian Campbell, Joslyn Korcok and Sophia Lawrence each had two hits, and Savannah Smith hit a home run in Slippery Rock’s 8-2 victory against visiting Oil City.

Korcok earned the pitching win with nine strikeouts and just two runs (one earned) allowed in a complete game.
