Man charged after high-speed chase, crash in city
A Butler man was allegedly drunk when he stole a car Thursday night and led police on a high-speed chase through the city before he crashed into another vehicle.
City police said Vincent T. Wallace, 59, allegedly stole the Pontiac Sunfire at the intersection of Main and Jefferson streets about 9:45 p.m.
Wallace led police on the chase through streets on the eastern side of the city before he crashed into a Ford Explorer at the intersection of McKean and Jefferson streets, according to court documents filed today.
Police said Wallace didn't stop after the accident and continued driving in the wrong direction on the one-way street. A city officer in pursuit stuck the stolen vehicle with his cruiser, sending it onto the curb near Birch Street.
Wallace then fled from the vehicle on foot before he was tackled by officers on East Jefferson Street.
A female passenger in the SUV was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with pain in her arms.
The woman driving the SUV was not injured.
The owner of the stolen car said he left it running to get money from the ATM at PNC Bank. He reported the theft to police.
When police finally took Wallace down in front of 119 East Cunningham St., they immediately recognized him.
While speaking to him, officers noticed alcoholic on his breath and requested a blood test.
Wallace made an unsolicited statement of “I'm sorry, officer. I did it. I stole the car and crashed it,” according to the complaint.
He is charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, as well as resisting arrest, DUI, and fleeing from an accident involving injury.
