Dean tosses 2-hit shutout
Tyler Dean tossed a two-hitter, striking out eight as Mars II won a 1-0 pitching duel over Freeport in Eagle County baseball action Wednesday night.
The game’s only run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and no one on base, Weston Hillegas reached on an error. Phil Double walked and Jim Roach singled to load the bases.
Ryan Leonberg then drew a walk to force home the winning tally.
James Connelly was the hard-luck loser for Freeport, pitching a three-hitter and striking out seven.
Mars II is 6-3 on the season.
In other action:
• Lou Downey struck out four in a route-going effort as Freeport II defeated Zelienople, 5-1. Downey had a double and single while Justin Bollinger had three singles for Freeport II (5-5).
Stu Weimer singled for Zelienople.
• Brian Warheit tossed a one-hitter while Greg Miller had an RBI single and Ben Follett a sacrifice fly to account for the lone runs in Cranberry’s 2-0 win over the Legacy Lions.
• Bob Spithaler had four hits, including a double and Nate Statzer two singles and a double to power Mars past Wexford 18-4 in five innings.
Don Dell and Brendan Malone each had two hits for Mars (8-2), while Owens and Wald each added a double for Wexford.
