BlueSox claim 6-2 victory over West Virginia

Matt Albaugh had three hits and an RBI and Chris Rasky two RBIs to lead the Butler BlueSox to a 6-2 victory over the host West Virginia Miners Sunday.

The Blue Sox (6-6) used a five-run second inning to take control as Dave Yakopec allowed one unearned run and four hits over 5 1-3 innings despite surrendering six walks. He had five strikeouts.

Bradley Strong had four of the Miners’ (9-3) six hits, including a double, and drove in both runs. Jared Messer was charged with the loss, although the five runs he allowed were all unearned while he fanned eight batters with just one walk.

On Saturday, the Miners prevailed 4-1 as Matt Chavarria had a double and two RBI and Strong added a triple, RBI and two runs scored to lead the way.

Albaugh and Elliott Caldwell had two hits each for the BlueSox while Kyle Petty drove in the lone run.

Will Blalock fanned seven batters and walked one over 7 1-3 innings to pick up the win while Blue Sox starter Joey Hoelzel allowed just one earned run over five innings, but issued five walks.

• Drew Bryan had three hits while Mike Porcaro, Dan Hurlimann and Pat Gelwicks each drove in a run as the Slippery Rock Sliders doubled up the visiting Lorain County Ironmen 6-3 on Sunday.

Hurlimann had a triple and Gelwicks a double to pace the Sliders (5-6) while the Ironmen (4-7) committed three errors on the night.

Slippery Rock received a strong outing by Luis Flores, who struck out eight batters and allowed just one walk and two runs over six innings. Zach Walsh would pick up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

On Saturday, the Sliders cruised past the Ironmen 12-4 as Hurlimann, Gelwicks, Trent Wooldridge, Ryan Abernathy and Steve Sulcoski drove in two runs apiece.

The Sliders, who broke the game open with a six-run eighth inning, banged out six doubles — including two by Gelwicks — while Hurlimann added a home run.

Jesse Mowen picked up the win with three strikeouts over six innings of work. Sam Alvis homered and scored two runs for Lorain County.
