Freeport softball wins big; North Catholic tennis reaches WPIAL team final: Roundup

Mady Bell and Addyson Caruso both had two hits and two RBIs as Freeport softball downed Greensburg Salem 13-0 in six innings Monday. Lauren Clark also homered for the Yellowjackets (8-10, 5-7 WPIAL Section 1-4A).

Ali Smith posted six frames in the circle, allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Seneca Valley 7, Plum 3 — Paige Volz came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle for the Raiders (14-3) while driving in two runs. Neve Miller had a solo homer, while Brielle White had a pair of hits.

North Catholic 8, Butler 5 — Kennedy Brown banged out two doubles and two more singles for the Trojanettes (11-4). Clare Kotwica and Eva Rocha both had two hits, as well.

Alaina Garbinski had a pair of hits for the Golden Tornado (1-17), including a triple.

Hickory 6, Slippery Rock 3 — Charley Thompson had two of the Rockets’ four knocks.

Karns City 16, Central Clarion 1 — The Gremlins (12-4) scored 10 runs in the first inning of this three-inning rout.

Nicole Huff contributed two hits, including a triple, while scoring three times and driving in three runs.

Addison Burrows had two hits and three RBIs, and in the circle she struck out five, walked none and allowed one unearned run on one hit in three innings.

Baseball

Carson Fowkes, Jameson Garvin and Tyler Rennebeck had two hits apiece as Mars topped Shaler 7-3. Garvin, Rennebeck and Timmy Joos all had doubles in the victory.

Freeport 12, Southmoreland 2 — Gavin Tola had a double among his four hits during the Yellowjackets’ win, driving in four runs. Gage Blystone had three singles and pushed across three runs.

Owen Westendorf went all six innings on the mound for Freeport (16-0, 11-0), allowing two runs and striking out nine.

Karns City 9, Clarion Limestone 0 — Colton Christie and Xavier Bartoe combined on the mound to allow three hits and strike out eight. Tyson Frazer had a single and a triple, driving across one.

Union/A-C Valley 15, Keystone 0 — Eight different batters had a hit for the Falcon Knights, led by Cody Bobbert’s two singles. Lexan Alworth had four RBIs, while Carter McGarvey added three more.

Montour 4, Knoch 3 — Montour starter Gavin Foley held the Knights scoreless through five innings before Knoch scored three runs in the top of the sixth against Montour’s bullpen.

Leadoff hitter Cooper Allison had two singles for Knoch, scoring once and driving in a run.

Beaver 4, North Catholic 1 — Matthew Madonna had three of the Trojans’ six total hits, including a double, in the defeat.

Boys tennis

In the WPIAL Class 2A team semifinals, No. 2 North Catholic dispatched No. 6 Indiana 3-2 in a match held at Kiski Area High School.

The Trojans will face No. 5 Quaker Valley, which upset top-seeded Blackhawk in the other semifinal, in the championship match at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson College.

Girls lacrosse

Katie Blake scored four goals in Mars’ 15-3 win against Quaker Valley.

Hailey Long and Tess McGrath added three scores apiece, while Lucy Balazs and Anna McGrath both scored twice.

Julia Lego made seven saves in net.

Boys lacrosse

Nate Caldwell had six goals and Jack Tirch another five as Mars downed Winchester Thurston 19-1. Parker Osterman added two more markers for the Planets.

Boys volleyball

Andrew Slaugenhoup had a team-high seven kills, but Butler fell to Meadville 3-1.

The Golden Tornado (14-4) took the first set 27-25 but lost the next three 25-10, 25-13, 25-19. Maddox McCall added 23 digs.
