Ontario native claims another Modified win at Lernerville

BUFFALO TWP — The drive has been well worth it — so far.

For the second consecutive Friday night, 23-year-old Modified driver Matt Williamson of St. Catharines, Ontario, has made the four-hour trip to victory lane at Lernerville Speedway.

Williamson won last week’s Fab Four season opener by default. He finished second to Lernerville’s all-time Modified wins leader, Brian Swartzlander, in the actual race, but was awarded victory when Swartzlander’s No. 83 car weighed in too light on the scales.

“Nobody weighed in too light in front of me this time,” Williamson said.

Starting from the 10th spot, Williamson chased down pole-sitter Jim Weller — a veteran driver with 34 career Modified wins at Lernerville — and passed him entering Turn 3 on the 23rd lap.

Having to survive a 25th-lap restart, due to Rex King Jr. flipping his No. 165 car off Turn 1 — Williamson held off Weller to return to the winner’s circle.

“I’ve never done this before anywhere,” Williamson said of winning back-to-back weeks at the same track. “I like this place. The track surface is wider than most and that makes for some good racing.

“This is the only place I can get Big Block Modified points at, so we’ll be here every week.”

Weller was bidding for his first feature win at Lernerville since 2010.

“My car was good, his was a tick better,” Weller said. “My car began getting loose late in the race. I knew it’d be tough to hold him off.”

Williamson has been racing since he began driving go-karts at age 5. He spent five years racing Sportsman Stocks and is in his fifth year in the Modified division.

He has never won a track championship. Williamson finished second in points three times at his home track in Canada and was second in the 358 Modified series last year.

“That’s the monkey on my back,” he said of not winning a track title. “I’m going after points here. So far, so good.”

In other Friday features at Lernerville:

Cap Henry of Bellevue, Ohio, took the lead from pole-sitter Danny Holtgraver on the back straightaway of the final lap to claim the Sprint feature.

It was the first career Sprint feature win for Henry at the Sarver oval. Holtgraver, the 2010 track champion here, led for the first 24 laps.

“I feel bad stealing one from Danny like that, but I’ve been on the other side of this with him before,” Henry said. “We came down here to test for the all-star race next week and, so far, we’re testing pretty good.”

Davey Johnson of Greensburg started on the pole for the Late Model feature and led wire to wire, notching his 11th career Lernerville win.

Dave Hess Jr., who won the first two Late Model features here this season, finished second after starting from the 10th spot.

“I could tell my car was good during the heat race,” Johnson said. “We were set up well. As long as I didn’t screw it up, we were good.”

Johnson’s car was prepared by Darrell Lanigan, last year’s World of Outlaws Sprint series champion.

“The track was racy tonight. It usually is,” Hess said. “That’s why I do well here. It’s never follow the leader. You can always pass.

“But in this division, if you’re not starting somewhere in those first three rows, it’s tough to get it done.”

Last year’s points champion, Corey McPherson of Tarentum, held off a hard-charging A.J. Flick to win the Sportsman Stock feature. Flick finished second after starting 12th.

McPherson has won eight features at Lernerville, five of those coming last year.

“We have a new car this year, new chassis, new motor,” McPherson said. “You have to get the bugs out and hopefully, we’ve done that.

“This car is much lower on power and that helps you on a slick track like this. You can floor it around turns because it doesn’t have much power.”

Notes: There were 97 cars in the pits. ... King was unhurt after flipping his Sprint car. ... Lernerville 1985-86 Late model points champion Ed Ferree of Saxonburg — father of three-time track champion Alex Ferree — competed Friday night and finished second in the B-Main, 16th in the feature. Alex Ferree finished sixth. ... There were 28 cars in the Sprint field as the All-Star Sprints run at the Sarver oval next Friday. Crate Late Models and Sportsman Stocks will also be on the card.
