BlueSox score weekend sweep

Saturday night, the Butler BlueSox won despite their offense.

On Sunday, the team’s bats were right in the middle of a 5-2 Prospect League baseball victory over West Virginia at Pullman Park.

Butler tallied 11 hits, including three triples, a night after a 2-1 win over the Miners that included just three hits and a pair of unearned runs against West Virginia ace Jaesung Hwang.

“He still hasn’t given up an earned run yet this year,” Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski said of Hwang. “But we kept battling. West Virginia’s pitching is off-the-charts good. They always seem to have a great staff. It’s tough to get 11 hits in a game against them, but we did it tonight.”

While Jon Anderson’s eight-inning gem led to Butler’s win Saturday, Adam Aldred pitched seven solid frames to spark the Sunday victory. He allowed just two unearned runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two.

Aldred set the Miners down in order in the first, second and sixth innings.

“It was a battle, but I just tried to get the hitters to put the ball in play,” said Aldred. “My changeup was working tonight, both for strikes and as an out-pitch. We scored a lot of runs with two outs and I have to give it up to the offense.”

In fact, all five of Butler’s runs came with two outs, starting in the third inning.

Moments after Kris Cayton was thrown out at home on a single by Ryan Fitzgerald, Matt Peters began a string of three straight hits for the BlueSox. His single plated Fitzgerald. Eric Hess and Tyler Detmer followed with a double and triple, respectively, that each scored another run.

Aldred surrendered the first of two unearned runs in the top of the fourth, but escaped further damage when, with two outs, he fanned Dale Davis with a high fastball.

“Adam is a bulldog when he is out there,” said Rebyanski. “He was throwing strikes tonight and he has control of his three pitches.”

West Virginia (12-12) cut its deficit to 3-2 when Pat Kregeloh’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Nick Paxton in the fifth inning.

But the BlueSox answered in the next half inning. Peters’ two-out triple chased Miners starter Rolando Celis from the game, but his replacement, Sam Hunter, walked Hess and Detmer before falling behind 1-0 on Taylor Schmidt. Vince Bartolone became West Virginia’s second reliever and promptly gave up a two-run single to Schmidt.

They would be the final runs scored by Butler (14-10), but thanks to Aldred and Co., the offense was more than enough. Anthony Battaglia and Tyler Ferguson combined to pitch two scoreless frames to end the game.

After striking out the first two batters he faced in the eighth, Battaglia walked three straight to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate in pinch-hitter Griffin Moore. Ferguson was called upon to end the threat, which he did with a flyout to left.

“For the most part, our bullpen has been strong this season,” said Rebyanski.

West Virginia manager Tim Epling was not available for comment.
