OUTDOOR NOTES

MUDDY CREEK TWP — Late season archery hunting will be allowed at Moraine State Park, according to the park and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The normally closed hunting area at the Pleasant Valley area on the South Shore will be open for archery hunters from Dec. 26 to Jan. 12.

The DCNR is opening the restricted area because the deer population is higher than wanted for that area.

"It is a great way to increase the biodiversity at Pleasant Valley and help control the deer population. There are a lot of deer out here," said assistant park manager Jeremy Rekich.

All hunters wanting to take part must sign in at the park office and pick up special hunting regulations. They must have identification, a state hunting license, archery tag and valid buck and antlerless tags.

Rekich expects no more than 100 hunters for the season.

The South Shore Pleasant Valley gate will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The upper exit game will stay open until 5:15 p.m.

For information, call the park office at724-368-8811.
