Rock tennis nets win

The Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team improved to 8-5 on the season with an 8-1 rout of Edinboro on Thursday in PSAC West action.

The Rock swept the three doubles matches, while Butler grad Courtney Gallagher picked up a win with Samantha Bruggeman in No. 3 doubles and also won at No. 6 singles.

SRU will return to action against West Virginia State on Saturday, before taking on the University of Charleston on Sunday.

SoftballSlippery Rock University opened its home schedule with a split against West Virginia State on Wednesday.The Rock earned a 6-2 victory in Game 1, before dropping a 6-4 decision in the second contest.Katie Saluga homered to put SRU on the board in the fifth inning of the first game, before freshman Katie Kaiser delivered a two-run shot later in the frame to score Emily Lobdell and give The Rock a 3-2 edge.SRU broke it open in the sixth, as Breanna Tongel hit a two-RBI double. Pinch-runner Sarah Lindvay later scored off a Saluga single.In Game 2, Butler grad Jenna Geibel hit her third home run of the season to give SRU an early 2-0 advantage. SRU’s lead bloated to 4-0 off RBI from Alaynna Beers and Tongel.Dee Dee Loftis tied it up for West Virginia State with a grand slam in the sixth inning and WVSU later took the lead.SRU returns to action today against Mercyhurst at 2:30 p.m.
