Henry rolls 21st perfect game
LYNDORA — For some, bowling a 300 game is a once-in-a-lifetime feat.
For Ron Henry, it was another in a long line of perfect nights on the lanes.
The Renfrew resident notched his 21st career 300 game while bowling for Sizzles Tans in the Butler City Ten Pin League Tuesday evening at Sherwood Lanes.
“I was still a little nervous, but not nearly as much as I was when I rolled my first one,” said Henry, 50.
Aside from his 21 meetings with perfection, he has come painfully close to 12 consecutive strikes on numerous occasions.
“I’ve bowled a 299 probably 10 times, when I have left a single pin on the last ball.
“When that happens, it’s frustrating,” Henry said. “Sometimes, it’s a bad break and sometimes, you just throw a bad ball.”
His most recent 300 game didn’t come against an opponent.
“Our league has just seven teams,” related Henry. “So every Tuesday, there is one team that gets a bye, but you still have to bowl. We were that team tonight.”
Henry grew up in the Highfield neighborhood and has been bowling since he was 16 years old. He has competed in the Ten Pin League for the last 30 years and also rolls in the Armco C League every Thursday. He carries an average of 220.
“My first 300 game was back in 1988 right here at Sherwood Lanes,” he said. “I’d say between 15 and 18 of them have come here. The last one I rolled was here about two years ago.”
For someone with so many perfect games to his credit, Henry’s advice to other bowlers is quite simple.
“Stay calm and take it one shot at a time,” he said. “You must have your timing down.”
While his 300 games are a good topic of conversation, they are not the reason Henry keeps coming back to the lanes year after year.
“It’s not necessarily for the bowling,” he said. “It’s the friendship and camaraderie. Most of my friends are here.”
