Dream season
BUFFALO TWP— Awesome Alex?Amazing Alex?Alex the Great?
Choose any nickname you like. Each aptly describes Alex Ferree's 2007 race season at Lernerville Speedway.
The Saxonburg driver of the No. 4 Late Model, who turned 27 this weekend, won his ninth feature in 17 points races at the Sarver track Friday night. He's finished no worse than fifth in any of the others.
Add in eight heat race triumphs and Ferree tallied about 590 points at Lernerville this year. He clinched the points championship a month ago.
"It's been a dream,"Ferree said. "If I am in dream world right now, don't wake me until next season."
Matt Lux is the only other Late Model driver to win even two features here on the campaign. David Scott was bidding for his second Lernerville win Friday, charging from the 12th starting spot, but he had to settle for second.
The feature had eight restarts over the final 12 laps, helping Scott to climb through the field. Only 11 of the 21 cars that started the race managed to finish it.
"I was a little better than Alex coming off Turn 4 and I was trying to set him up coming off that turn for the checkered,"Scott said. "I got alongside him a lap too early and messed it up.
"That's OK. Finishing second to Alex here is like getting a win."
Ferree credited much of his success this year to crew chief Fred Bratchie and the rest of his pit personnel.
"This championship goes to my crew,"he said. "They busted their butts every week to get this car ready."
Ferree won his first Lernerville feature in a MACSrace four years ago. He entered this season with only two career feature victories here.
This was the first season Ferree has raced for points at Lernerville.
"I didn't expect this. Nobody could have,"he said of his domination of the Late Model division.
"I'm good friends with Alex,"Scott said. "I have a lot of respect for him. He races clean and he's a good guy. He and his crew just put together an incredible year."
Wrapping up points titles Friday night were Kevin Schaeffer in the Sprints, Brian Swartzlander in the Modifieds and Mike Pegher Jr. in the Pure Stocks.
Schaeffer finished third in the feature while Rod George finished fourth. Schaeffer held off George's late-season charge by eight points to win his second consecutive Lernerville track title.
"Rod missed some races here last year and a lot of people felt he would have beaten me out if he didn't,"Schaeffer said. "Rod ran the whole season here this year, so it feels good to win this."
Ed Lynch Jr. won six features here this year and George won five. Schaeffer beat out both for the points title despite claiming only one feature win.
"My crew is so dedicated to taking care of the race car,"Schaeffer said. "We work on it every night, tear it apart to check what parts might be going bad. ... It takes a lot of effort to do this."
Brian Ellenberger of Butler won Friday's Sprint feature while breaking out a new car in preparation for next Friday's Sonia Bullis Memorial All-Star Sprint event here.
"We just came out here to shake the car down tonight,"Ellenberger said. "Man, the guys had me hooked up."
Swartzlander finished second to Jim Weller Jr. in the Modified feature and held off Del Rougeux Jr. for the points crown. Rougeux has the lead on second-place Swartzlander in the points race at Sharon Speedway.
The track championship is Swartzlander's fifth at Lernerville since 1998.
"We weren't gonna just play it safe out there,"Swartzlander said of his second-place finish. "Our car was good and I went for it, but Jimmy was a little faster."
Weller's win marked his first feature triumph here since Aug. 18 of last year.
Pegher, a Seneca Valley graduate, wrapped up the Pure Stocks title during the heat races.
"My grandfather won two track titles here, so this means a lot to myself and my family,"Pegher said. "To finish tops among the fast cars that run here is a nice accomplishment.
"I'm definitely running a Late Model next year. All of my (Pure Stock) stuff is for sale. If no one buys it, we'll get the car ready again and do some special shows with it next year."
Wayne Carbo of Saxonburg won the Pure Stock feature, his first triumph of the year here.
Notes:There were 87 cars in the pits. ... Former track champions Lynn Geisler and Kevin Bolland did not win a Lernerville feature during points nights all season. ... Nick Reges of Butler violently flipped his No. 38RLate Model in the front straightaway. The car was destroyed, but he was unhurt. ... Dan Shetler won his heat race, but flipped his No. 98 Sprint car in the feature. He was also uninjured.
