County runners do well
PITTSBURGH — Boniface Kongin, 29, of Albuquerque, N.M., was the overall winner of the Pittsburgh Marathon Sunday morning.
Kongin broke the tape in 2 minutes, 10.34 seconds, three seconds ahead of runner-up Girma Bekele Gebre, 26, of New York.
The overall female winner was Bizuwork Getahun Kasaye, 30, of New York. She finished the race in 2:36.29.
Numerous Butler County runners fared well on the day. The Wolf Creek Track Club, based in Mars, won the marathon relay division in 2:26.49. The Labors Ladies, a female relay team out of Sarver, placed second in the women’s division in 3:06.51.
The top male runner from Butler County was Rick Hinman, 36, of Cranberry Township. He finished 62nd in 2:52.59. Zach Manual, 30, of Butler finished 105th in 3:01.54.
On the women’s side, Hayley Davis, 22, of Freeport placed 12th. She ran the race in 3:06.24. Rachael Wittmer, 20, of Butler, finished 32nd in 3:26.48.
The half-marathon saw Mars resident Sean McDonnell, 25, place 12th overall in 1 hour, 13.58 minutes. Rob DiLoreto II, 40, of Mars, finished 39th in 1:20.57.
The top half-marathon finisher among Butler County women was Lissa Batchelli, 40, of Mars, who placed 14th in the female division in 1:29.22.
Other top female runners from Butler County in the women’s half-marathon were Rachel Martin, 22 of Mars (26th); Christie Lazzara, 42, of Cranberry Township (28th); Leslie Kramer, 41, of Slippery Rock (37th); Jessica Griggs, 33, of Cranberry Township (39th) and Anna Cessar, 25, of Slippery Rock (41st).
