I’m rooting for Omar Infante.

In fact, I voted for him 35 times (on this computer’s IP address, that is) to start for the American League at second base in the MLB All-Star Game next month.

Why, you ask? The Kansas City Royals’ batting abyss certainly doesn’t deserve to start.

He is the worst second baseman statistically in the game among qualified players with a .227 batting average and 19 RBI this season.

Frank White has hit just as many home runs as Infante while playing second base for the Royals this season.

So, again, you ask why would I vote for such a bad, bad player?

Anarchy!

Right now, six of Infante’s Royal teammates are also in line to start the Mid-Summer Classic. Sure, a case can be made for some of them like designated hitter Kendrys Morales, third baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Salvador Perez.

But not all seven of them.

Despite that, I’m rooting for all nine to get a starting bid.

If I could have voted for Steve Balboni at first base, I would have.

Like I said, anarchy.

When a system is flawed, it’s time to overthrow the system.

First of all, it’s ridiculous that the result of the All-Star Game matters come October with the winning league earning home field advantage in the World Series.

Second of all, it was just a matter of time before something like this happened.

Stuffing the ballot box is not a new phenomena — Barney Rubble probably stuffed the ballot box in a Loyal Order of the Water Buffaloes treasurer election. It was easy to grab a stack of ballots back in the day and fill them out wantonly over the course of a nine-inning game.

With all ballots electronic now, cheating is even easier.

Fans can get it right. They are getting it right (for the most part) in the National League this season. But fans have too much power when it comes to who starts.

A solution would be for fans to vote for the entire roster and let the managers decide who starts.

Another solution would be to make the player vote carry more weight.

Or, we can just hope the Royals go back to stinking again like they have for the better part of 30 years and no one in Kansas City will care anymore.

No matter what happens, the All-Star Game shouldn’t decide anything but bragging rights.

It certainly shouldn’t have a potentially huge impact on the World Series.

And Omar Infante, should he hang on over more deserving American League second basemen like Jason Kipnis, Dustin Pedroia and Jose Altuve, and win the starting nod for the All-Star Game, will probably come down with a “mild hamstring pull” and bow out of the game.

I hope he plays, however. And I hope he’s the All-Star MVP.
