Organization donates $30,000
Butler’s Riding for the Cure donated $30,000 this year to outreach cancer programs.
Since 2012, the organization has donated $80,000 to cancer programs, increased its efforts and experimented with new fundraisers.
This year the group’s main event, the ride, was July 25, and it had more than 300 people ride their motorcycles more than 100 miles. The money was donated to the Richard Laube Cancer Center and the Butler Health Systems Foundation.
“I think everything went fantastic,” vice president Ned Kerr said of the ride.
The organization also started hosting small bowl-a-thons and a year-round hair drive.
The hair drive may differ from typical hair donations. Kerr said members collect hair during designated drives but also donations from patrons of hair dressers. They take the hair to Creative Hair Solutions in Allison Park, where halos and wigs are made.
Kerr said the halos and wigs are paid with some of the fundraiser money so cancer patients can get them for free. He said it also gives the younger generation an opportunity to help.
“We’re trying to find new ways to raise money for cancer patients,” Kerr said. “We’ve had up to 10 inches of hair donated, even by people under the age of 18.”
The hair drives continue year-round, and wigs become available regularly.
The organization has plans for another bowling event this fall.
