Cranberry Township man accused of beating couple

A Cranberry Township man is accused of beating a couple in his apartment.

Derek James Cowan, 35, was charged Monday, March 9, by Cranberry Township police with two felony counts of aggravated assault and three misdemeanor counts of simple assault following an incident Sunday.

Police said they were dispatched to the 5000 block of Pendleton Way for reports of a man attacking people and three to four people injured.

Police arrived and found Cowan being held down by bystanders.

Police said the incident began when Cowan’s parents went to his apartment to check on him, and he exited the bathroom agitated. Police said Cowan then shoved a woman to the floor, which caused her to fall and strike her head, leaving a severe laceration.

A man tried to intervene but was pushed back. Police said when the woman got up, Cowan punched her in the eye.

The bleeding woman then sneaked out of the apartment and called 911 as Cowan began punching the man. Police said Cowan eventually picked up a barstool and struck the man’s left arm, breaking it.

A bystander then encountered the bleeding woman outside the apartment and attempted to help. Police said Cowan exited the apartment and began an altercation with the bystander. Another bystander got involved and helped subdue Cowan, police said.

When police spoke with the woman again, she had gauze wrapped around her head, a swollen shut left eye and bruising on her cheek. The man had a “clearly broken” arm, side pain and blood coming from his forehead, police said.

Both went to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry Township for treatment.

Cowan’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 20 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty. He’s being held in Butler County Prison on $125,000 bail.
