Penguins acquire massive forward Elmer Soderblom from Red Wings ahead of NHL trade deadline

PITTSBURGH — After a series of in-season trades, the Penguins have been quiet during deadline week. But not silent.

Pittsburgh acquired monstrous winger Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick that originally belonged to the San Jose Sharks.

A 2019 sixth-round pick by Detroit, Soderblom is 6-feet-8, 252 pounds. He has 22 points in 86 career NHL games, including three points in 39 games this season.

The 24-year-old had a more productive campaign last season. He tallied 11 points in 26 NHL games, and the team’s offensive numbers with Soderblom on the ice were among the highest on the team.

He’s signed through next season with a $1.125 million cap hit. He’ll be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2027.

In 119 career AHL games, he’s tallied 54 points.

The trade fits the mold of Kyle Dubas’ recent moves — acquiring players in their mid-20s who may have untapped potential. Soderblom possesses significant skill for a player of his size, and his hardest shot this season ranks in the 92nd percentile, according to NHL Edge Data.

He’s also among Detroit’s leaders in hits per 60 minutes of ice time. But despite his size, he’s no enforcer. Soderblom has dropped the gloves just once in his NHL career, according to HockeyFights.com.

He competed on Sweden’s 2021 World Junior Championship team. Soderblom has played parts of three seasons in the NHL. This has been the first where he has not split time between the Red Wings and their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. But he’s often been scratched on a Detroit team that ranks among the Atlantic Division leaders.
