2 charged with bank card theft

They bought D.C. train tickets

CRANBERRY TWP — A Butler Township woman and a Louisiana teenager are accused of using a stolen bank card to buy tickets for a train ride to the nation’s capital in December.

Police last week charged both suspects — Teresa J. Guiste, 39, of Lyndora and Kristen L.M. Collins, 19, of Sidell, La. — with access device fraud, conspiracy, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property — all felonies — and a misdemeanor count of theft of services.

The pair Dec. 13 allegedly took a wallet from a Walmart shopper who momentarily left it in the ladies’ rest room at the store on Route 19, Cranberry Township police said.

By the time the customer, a Wexford woman, realized she had forgotten her wallet and returned to the ladies room, it was gone.

Police suspect the defendants took the wallet and used a bank debit card in it Dec. 15 to buy two Amtrak tickets to Washington, D.C., for a total of $673.

The pair wasn’t as lucky when they tried to hire Cranberry Taxi for a ride to the train station in Pittsburgh. The cab company declined the charge.

Still, they eventually made it to the station and boarded the train. They were held soon after reaching their destination.

But the suspects were later released after police in Washington decided not to prosecute them, said Cranberry police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino. He did not know the reason.

However, Cranberry police filed charges themselves. District Judge Dave Kovach on Friday signed warrants for the defendants’ arrests.

“But we don’t know where they are,” Mascellino said.
