A Butler woman reached speeds of 115 mph during a Friday, Feb. 20, chase that led police from Butler to Venango County, police said.

Victoria Baptiste, 38, is accused of running stoplights and red lights as she fled police at high speeds following an evening traffic stop in Butler, police said.

Baptiste was charged Saturday by state police in Butler with one felony count each of fleeing police and flight, and one misdemeanor count each of DUI, controlled substance possession, drug paraphernalia possession and resisting arrest.

Police said they were on Race Street in Butler around 6 p.m. when they spotted Baptiste’s vehicle with an invalid registration.

Police stopped the vehicle on West Cunningham Street and found Baptiste in the driver’s seat and a woman in the back seat.

When police returned to their vehicle to run their information, the woman reportedly exited the back seat of the vehicle, and Baptiste drove off.

Police pursued Baptiste onto Church Street, New Castle Street, North Washington Street, North Street and Main Street before she drove north on Route 8. Police said Baptiste ran four stop signs and one red light in Butler during the chase.

Baptiste passed vehicles unsafely in the city and continued to pass vehicles in oncoming traffic on Route 8, which is where she reached speeds up to 115 mph, police said.

Spike strips were successfully deployed after the chase reached Venango County, police said. Police further used a precision immobilization technique on the vehicle, which sent it off the road.

A PIT maneuver is when a police vehicle nudges the rear quarter panel of the fleeing vehicle near the back wheel to cause the driver to spin out in the safest manner possible.

Baptiste was then placed into custody while she resisted arrest. Police said she had a clear bag containing a white substance, various drug paraphernalia items and showed signs of impairment.

Police said Baptiste also had a warrant for a probation violation out of Clarion County.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. March 2 before District Judge William Fullerton related to the chase.

Separately, on Feb. 9, Baptiste was charged with misdemeanor unauthorized vehicle use following a Feb. 5 incident. Police said Baptiste did not return a borrowed vehicle.

Her preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. March 30 before Fullerton.
