Rock men earn soccer victory
Freshman forward Gary Saunders scored on a corner kick in the 89th minute of action Tuesday, giving the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) at Egli Field.
Junior midfielder Dave Keller scored an unassisted goal during the 67th minute to tie the game at 2.
Freshman forward Ed Mocarsky scored in the first half to the tie the game at 1 for The Rock (8-5-2). SRU goalie Pat Passewitz had four saves as The Rock had an 18-8 edge in shots on goal.
The Rock travels to Bloomsburg for a PSAC game at noon Saturday. SRU remains in the hunt for a PSAC playoff berth.
The Rock's four-match winning streak came to an end Tuesday with a 3-0 loss to first-place Lock Haven at Morrow Field House.Lindsay Weber led SRU (15-13, 1-6) with nine kills, 16 digs and three aces. Katie Greco added 10 kills.SRU travels to Penn State-Behrend to meet Frostburg State (Md.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
SRU snapped a nine-game losing streak Monday with a 3-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson.Lisa Gehn, Katie Krochmal and Michelle Mumma scored for The Rock. Ashley Hanna recorded an assist.Goalie Tara Bailey had five saves for SRU (2-14), which had a 16-9 edge in shots.The loss spoiled a return to the SRU campus for former Rock player and coach Jenny Dumas, who is now the head coach at W&J (8-9).
